Open Town Protest Sparks Clergy Flight Over Humes Square
Fifteen church members led by clergymen fled last night in a council protest against dedicating the square at First and Cedar in memory of ex mayor Thomas J. Humes. They accused the late chief executive of a wide open policy and said his public reputation rests on that record. The council later passed resolutions praising his administration while the protesters argued the policy stained civic life. A separate filing reported a $624,229 property transfer from Northern Pacific to Northwestern Improvement Co across several counties.
