A devastating blast at a Chicago plant caused a building collapse and spread a large fire. Seventy four workers were on site. five died and many were injured. Fire crews battled the blaze as neighbors evacuated and a search for missing workers continued.
Nov 14 report from Astoria describes a heavy storm likely eroding parts of the Columbia river jetty. An eyewitness near the south end notes old work at one gate end vanished and portions of new work disappeared. About half of the jetty’s trestling may have been swept away by the surge.

An unknown man about 21 was found murdered in a field south of Rockton. He was stabbed in the throat with a handkerchief. A tag from Santa Rem clothing house bore the address Bert Kimber, Lo a. The victim was well dressed and had a distinctive double row of teeth.
Walla Walla officials announced that the cannon donated to Abraham Lincoln Post No 4 G A R by the city during the war will be placed in the clip park. The city council approved furnishing the ground and allocating 476 dollars from the park fund to cover mounting the ordinance piece.
Coroners jury in Heppner considers the death of Frank Nather after a shooting at Medlock’s saloon. Dee Matlock’s father Matlock testifies that Creswell's gun misfired and Nather’s weapon struck Creswell, who was wounded in the mouth and neck. Dee Matlock is cleared of shooting but witnesses say a gunpowder mark shows his hand near the scene. Myron restrained Creswell as shots occurred.
November 18 Chicago faced a widening strike as furniture wagon drivers quit under union orders, forming picket lines and prompting riot threats. The International Teamsters Association may seek an injunction while firms including Heyward Bros and Herald Chair Co feel the impact as rioting spreads with police clashes on Kingsley and Valon streets leaving several officers hurt and wagons seized.
Nov 18 Auburn reports attorneys for Adolph Weber prepare to defend as coroner's jury convenes. Prosecution seeks to shift blame toward an unknown woolen-legged man seen near Conroy hotel. Witness accounts describe a fire, a doorway escape, and a facial remark attributed to a stranger. Meanwhile Spokane tests show seven of 21 dental applicants passing, including HB York of Walla Walla.
Reports from Tokio dated November 14 and 18 state the Japanese destroyed a Riietan arsenal at Port Arthur after locating the site and concentrating artillery. A subsequent dispatch from St Petersburg on November 18 notes a fresh Japanese attempt to retake Pullllof or Lone Tree Hill, repulsed last night. Also dated November 15 announces the Russian fleet’s second division has arrived at Pakkebers.

A fire at 1 o'clock destroyed Pier No 5 of the Hoommac Marine docks causing an estimated loss of 600000 dollars. The blaze endangered the Charlestown water front for a time. The docks were owned by the Moston and Maine railway. A rough draft of an Anglo American arbitration treaty has been drawn up in Birmingham. The American congress is expected to accept. The freight steamer Mohawk of the Central Vermont railway burned off Horton's Point. the crew was rescued.
A. P. Nash veteran O R & N conductor died this afternoon at his home in the city at 1 30 o'clock from heart and kidney troubles. He leaves a widow and sister Mrs John Sherman of Spokane. Nash came to La Grande in 1889 from Michigan and moved to Pendleton in 1900. He was widely known and loved on the Oregon Railroad & Navigation Company and a longtime friend of Conductor Charles F. Brown.
The Pacific Coast Steamship Company plans to spend about 300 000 on two steamers for Puget Sound service. One will serve the Kentuck-Bellingham route replacing the Mainlander, with a second added after the first proves efficient. The ships will carry high speed, mail and passengers between Seattle and nearby ports, upgrading travel options and accommodations.
Actress Mina Handolph sustained injuries in an automobile accident in Los Angeles on November 14. Humphrey Praed, distant manager of the San Jacinto Land Company in Riverside, was killed. Attending physicians expect recovery for Handolph. Olympia hotel, oldest in the city, was demolished after a November storm, costing about 100000, to accommodate legislative crowds.
