Umatilla County Gains National Prominence in Wheat Payday
Editorial note in the New York World highlights Umatilla County as rare in receiving front page publicity for a banner wheat check of 70,842 dollars tied to a 1907 harvest. The Oregon Daily Journal first reported the payment to George Peringer, with 3000 acres producing the crop. The piece traces wheat history from New York and Oregon, noting growth of cereal empire westward and northwestward as eastern states diversify.
