Harshly garbled text reports on gold shipments and currency movements. First National conducted Saturday business under normal conditions. A half million in gold moved through the pen weton in express care. Dalfour Guthrie Co receives money.
Washington November 11 Senator Bourne exerts effort to obtain treasury assistance for Oregon banks and foresees a large amount of treasury coin heading westward soon.
Optimism spreads as banks report smoother conditions with the First National Bank noting near normal operations. A $10,000 currency shipment and $150,000 in printing aid the bank, while Portland wheat drafts gain viability. Large gold shipments totaling about $750,000 pass to Portland banks aided by guards, with Northwest wheat and corn deliveries speeding up to ease the money squeeze.
Six potatoes weighing 10 pounds are shown at the Hartman abstract office illustrating what a mountain ranch in Umatilla county can produce. The potatoes come from the B. F. Marlin ranch six miles from Meacham and were sent to Mr. Bentley by Ben Marlin. A sack held 107 potatoes totaling 110 pounds. The Marlin place was recently bought by Meacham hotel man George Peebler and is praised as a leading small fruit hay and vegetable ranch.
A caboose derailed after breaking loose from a train near Ashland causing a wreck that damaged the engine of a fast freight at Voorhela and set fire to the caboose. Traffic was delayed for several hours as crews cleared the wreck and repaired the line.
A wood hauler narrowly escaped death when a heavy loaded wagon rolled back down a steep grade near Agen cy. The man was knocked down as the wagon and team passed over him but suffered only bruises and a knocked about body with no serious injuries. The wagon ended inverted at the hill’s foot.
Boise reports that H H Gickman of Chicago drowned while bathing in the Nata torium. He was to wed Miss Mabel Shoemaker of Baker City Oregon today. Miss Shoemaker arrived Saturday and is prostrated by the shock.
W M Ladd of Portland announces reimbursement of all deposits in the defunct Tithe Guarantee & Trust Co. Ladd & Tilton had held a first mortgage on the Margua building for 607000 but released it to protect small depositors. Total bank deposits reached about 405000 in savings, plus 1056000 in demand accounts and 175000 in time certificates, with 100000 owed the First National Bank and 50000 to Ladd & Tilton.
Eight hundred feet underground in the Draper coal mine Michael McCabe was trapped in a blind chamber during a blast. He reportedly ran the wrong way, the roof caved in, and officials say it may take a year to reach him. His wife and children live nearby in Mahony City, Pennsylvania.
A large keg of pennies arriving at Pendleton post office aids local cash handling. Recorder F W Hendley received a shipment of specie from Walla Walla including a 120 one cent coin payment for a filing fee by attorney BE King. An earlier $87 check and later $1.20 check were rejected due to office money rules.
Rumor says warrants out for Leon Jaussaud and Davin Brothers of this city and C A Hale of Weakeburg for violating Oregon sheep law. Warrants issued in Wallowa and Union counties, Oregon, but the men and their flocks have left Oregon. officers may face difficulty serving them. Chicago to have grand jury probe into alleged bribery over a telephone franchise.

In Milton Oregon on November 11 Mrs J P Hays widow living with five children saw her residence destroyed by a morning fire started in a closet. The $600 plus building loss and ruined furniture left no insurance. Residents donate to fund a replacement home with over $690 raised.
Hermiston November 11 At a mass meeting of town voters last Saturday night the Citizens ticket was placed in the field with candidates for city offices including mayor J M Griffin recorder G B Williams treasurer Russell Brownell marshal Charles Wilmarth councilmen H M Straw F A Yates W R B Stewart J D Rice H T Irwin and H E Hanby.
Pendleton Investment Co buys 100000 shares of Oregon Gas & Oil at 26 cents, funds all improvements, as a 786 foot Payette gas well shows blowouts while a 14 inch oil well is started to tap below gas zones. Promoters say development not speculative and expect large oil and gas discoveries in eastern Oregon and southern Idaho.
Nine year old N. J. Newman of Minot North Dakota was crushed to death when struck by a Northern Pacific train in Helena Montana yesterday. The accident occurred as the boy reportedly wandered onto the tracks near the yards where the locomotive movement was heavy. Police and railroad officials investigated the incident.
Pendleton November 11. Mayor Fee tours the city with the health officer inspecting meat markets near Chinatown and the business district. He notes concerns over pens behind shops with sickly chickens feeding on refuse, saying some markets will protest any ordinance aimed at pest control and plague prevention. The goal is to remove pens that attract rats and safeguard public health while not banning poultry within city limits.
