Lewis Ferris confessed to placing 26 sticks of dynamite under the Burlington Flyer last Friday night causing a deadly wreck. He led detectives to a mountain cache to recover remaining dynamite and powder. Ferris also admitted involvement in an attempted hold up of the North Coast Flyer two weeks earlier. Public anger simmers with threats of lynching. he remains under heavy guard at all times.
La Porte Ind May 7 no new bodies found at Gunness farm as search continues. Witness Besaie Conkin of Michigan City says Ray Lamphere sweetheart was threatened with arson in her presence. Examined bodies show fractured skulls and poison deaths. Sheriff Smutsner travels to Chicago to discuss a theory that Gunness farm was a clearing house for Chicago killers.
In San Francisco on May 7 W. A. Carmen from Spokane shot and killed his wife as she collected tickets in a nickelodeon on Broadway Street. He approached and said I told you I would kill you if you left me then fired three times. She died instantly. Carmen had come from Spokane six weeks earlier and worked as a bookkeeper for the Great Northern. His wife had left him months before and sought a divorce to marry a local bartender.
Richard Bond of Portland, angered by claims his sister was ruined by George A. Walkem of Vancouver, assaulted Walkem near the Vancouver courthouse just before Walkem's trial. The incident occurred this morning as the case was about to begin.
Bond advanced and struck Walkem with stinging blows in court. Two policemen needed to separate them while Bond was kept under close watch to prevent further violence. Miss Bond, 24, fainted twice while testifying about visits to Portland Seattle and Bellingham with Walkem who used the alias George Alexander. She once stayed at the YWCA in Portland. Walkem is a nephew of a former British Columbia prime minister.
Seven college students arrested for disturbance and rock attack on Marsha Holt faced Police Judge Wenham. B. H. Hawkins found guilty with a 5 fine plus costs. jurors waived their $1 fees bringing costs from 10 to 4. R. A. Jackson acquitted. Five others pleaded guilty and paid 5 with costs totaling 44. Also Boston May 7: William Jennings Bryan endorsed by Massachusetts Democrats.
Mrs Edward Hugh Martin declares she will not testify to help convict her husband. Police find a bloodstained overcoat and rifle tied to the Wolff estate case. Martin, an ex soldier, denies ownership of the coat and seeks an alibi as ex-US Senator Gearin defends him in a hard trial setup.
Sheriff believes Dixie woman Mrs. Aldrich was murdered. A $1000 reward is offered for her missing body or alive. Barnes brothers give conflicting tales. oldest asserts taking her to Wakeburg and leaving her on a street. He claims purchases and returns, but no witness sighting in Waitsburg.
City council received bids for Madison street resurvey and water system installation for the cemetery project. Jacobsen Bade of Portland offered the lowest bid of 5609, beating Clarke & Co by 1. Subscriptions nearly cover the funds and bids were referred to the cemetery committee with no action yet. Draymen's hauling compensation for fire apparatus will be reduced to 1.00 for the hose cart and 0.50 for return, with 1.00 for the hook and ladder truck in the future.
New York May 7 four people died in a tenement fire of incendiary origin. Victims Samuel Sachs Eva Berm and an unidentified man perished while mercinn score were badly injured as residents slept when the alarm sounded.
The seven year old son of Edgar McManigle of Page Washington drowned when he fell from a scow on March 17. After drifting about sixty miles in the Columbia and Snake rivers, his body was found lodged on driftwood on the east end of a sand island opposite Irrigon. The father, a government river project supervisor, will bring the remains to Portland for burial.
In Vienna on May 7 the German emperor and four kings personally congratulated Franz Joseph on the 50th anniversary of his accession to the Austro-Hungarian throne. A rare monarchs’ gathering drew thousands to the capital, the first such assembly in a century. Emperor Wilhelm, his wife and daughter arrived from Corfu, and Franz Joseph greeted his brother.
In Walla Walla on May 7 a body is found by Dorsey Brunton and Fred Ross at the foot of an uprooted tree on the Copper River bank. Mrs Anna Aldrich, missing since last Friday, death under investigation as three youths aged 18, 25 and 16 are jailed on comp licipy charges. Sheriff Haviland and Coroner MacMartin are at the scene amid fears of lynching. troops and deputies stand ready.
Walla Walla reporters say W H Barnes George Barnes and A J Barnes are jailed on murder charges in connection with the disappearance of Mrs Anna Aldrich eight miles east of Walla Walla. Sheriff Haviland notes three witnesses saw Barnes with Aldrich on a rural road and the strong box with her valuables was found at the Aldrich home. A $100 reward is offered for her discovery dead or alive, with possible further rewards if the search continues.
San Francisco beat Los Angeles 5 to 6 with darkness ending the game in the 12th. Portland tied San Francisco 4 to 4, called in the 7th due to rain. Seattle and Vancouver, Tacoma and Spokane, and Aberdeen and Butte also played with several games called early for darkness or weather.
Justice R S Bean completes the May term as the Oregon Supreme Court disperses. He will travel east to attend a governors conference at the White House and join a West Point inspection panel to report to Congress on army affairs. Other justices head to La Grande and Walla Walla while Moore returns to Salem.
Dealers gather at the Commercial Association rooms in Pendleton at 8 pm for a possible county real estate men’s association and a publicity bureau talk. A banquet for visiting real estate men will follow at Hotel Pendleton with T. T. Geer as toastmaster and space for 75 to 100 guests.
Miss Irene Duff of Boise Idaho was detained in San Francisco on a charge by Arthur Lister Newton Iowa that she robbed him of 120 dollars in Golden Gate Park. Detective Trill noted her stylish appearance as the hotel lobby scene sparked police inquiry into her record.
In Washington Courthouse Ohio Bert Devaney shot and killed Miss Lydia Bird at her John Street home. He then wounded Mrs Bird, killed Silas Chackleford, and killed himself. The motive is believed to be jealousy. Devaney, 43, was white. Bird, 28, was Black.
The First Bank of Pilot Rock opened this morning becoming the town’s first banking institution. Douglas Betts serves as president with J N Burgess as vice president and George G Schlegel as cashier. Directors are L L Mann C W Mathews Douglas Bella George Carnes and Herbert Boylen. Capital stock is 15000 fully paid in.
