At the Commercial Association gathering in Pendleton plans were announced for a banquet for visiting land dealers, to be held at the Hotel Pendleton after the Thursday meeting. Committee members were named to arrange the $1 banquet, with support pledged by several attendees.
Voted into the association are J. Hawkins, T. J. Tweedy, D. B. Costuma, Glenn Meddleaworth, J. F. Summers, N. C. Richards and W. A. Snedeker. The list reflects leadership choices amid ongoing organizational activity and future plans.
Chicago May 6 The Inter Ocean reports X ray expert Wolfram C Fuchs who died of X ray cancer developed a secret to convert living organisms into metal. After his death his brother R C Pucha continued, aiming to metalize a pauper’s body and display it as a real looking statue in a downtown shop window. Estimated cost for the conversion is 560 dollars.
San Francisco May 6 a mighty naval fleet passed the Golden Gate with about one million spectators along the bay. The Connecticut led the ships in squadron formation past Alcatraz and Mission Rock amid smoke and salutes as Admiral Evans commanded the flagship. Towns within 100 miles were depopulated and transportation strained as crowds filled waterfronts and hotels along the peninsula and Presidio.
About 40 000 sheep were shorn in Yakima county last month by a power plant in the hills east of North Yakima. The operation ends this week and moves to Ellensburg to shear about 60 000 more. Wool buyers have visited North Yakima but offered nothing and no sale day has been set. Wool is exceptionally good this year.
Democratic central committee used honeyed words to persuade leading Republicans to join Governor Chamberlain on his Umatilla county tour. Most prominent Republicans declined the invitation, remaining loyal to H. M. Cake, who will likely visit the area with Democratic allies only.
Edward Hugh Martin, West Pointer and ex cavalry officer, once famed for Cuban War honors, now jailed in Portland for the Wolff murder. His wife says she believes he is the killer, citing his recent pawning of a watch and past drug and insanity troubles after a troubled prewar career and a Pool Room Queen marriage.
Sheldon Dahl seven and Carrie Anderson eight rescued Garfield Vilander a ten year old boy who fell from a float into ten feet of water during high tide. They pulled him to safety grabbing his collar as he rose and sank twice. Vilander recovered but was ill from the ordeal.
August Belmont's Norman II led the American entries to victory in the 2000 guineas at Newmarket England on May 6. Odds favored the American challenger at 25 to 1 as the race unfolded with Norman II prevailing in a clash of English racing.
La Porte Indiana May 6 Nine more bodies were found on Mrs Hell Gunness farm bringing total to thirteen as police fear a murder ring used matrimonial ads to lure men. Investigators say mattresses covered graves dirt hid bodies and bones were found nearby while detectives seek the missing victims rumored to be killed and buried on the property.
Portland crowds witnessed a 7 to 1 defeat as San Francisco Seals sluggers toppled the home team. Sliver Heneley excelled in relief for the Seals, while Garrett struggled as Portland endured early season heartbreak. Northwest League results and a May 6 political update follow.
Boise May 6 Governor Goodloe will reprieve Harry Orchard who faces a May 15 hanging. The pardon board will not act until July at its next regular meeting. Attorney General says board cannot take up new business at special meetings. Orchard yesterday dismissed Attorney Wyman and voiced displeasure at efforts to save his life while reaffirming his wish to be hung.
San Francisco May 6 A $100000 fire broke out in the Mission district and threatened the area until the department arrived. Nearby stores were saved by lack of a breeze and several families escaped by narrow margins. During the blaze thieves robbed a dozen or more places in the block. A second fire three blocks away destroyed a hardware store and restaurant, causing a loss of $50000.
Salem officials report the state land board and Irrigation and Power Company reached an understanding to release the mortgages and issue deeds with title clear of any cloud. Governor Chamberlain refused to align deeds until arrangements with mortgage holders were made, but settlers may now obtain deeds as they prove residence, six months required.
Pendleton high school track crew led by captain Jay leaves at noon for Pullman to compete in the Inter scholastic field meet. Ora Jay, Nat Kimball, Arthur Means, Lester Means, and Chester Gordon sail north with Hampton, principal, accompanying. Lewiston and Spokane rivals loom as Pendleton eyes a trophy with hopes rising after Walla Walla showing.
At a meeting of the Umatilla Water Users association in Hermiston plans were set for a May 27 excursion to the government dam opening. Committees were named for transportation, refreshments, and program. Judge Stephen A. Lowell and Engineer John T. Whistler are among expected speakers. 250 to 300 visitors may be transported from Hermiston with a potential two trips.
The Standard Oil appeal of Judge Landis's £99,000,000 fine starts tomorrow and may last several days. In Nevada, near Reno, the remains of Hutchinson Stevens, abducted six months ago, are found with a bullet wound and a rifle nearby. The cause of death remains undetermined.
Avon Ridge was sentenced by Circuit Judge Bean to an indeterminate term in the penitentiary for stealing a horse from Charles Hamilton. He pleaded guilty and may win release within a year for good conduct. R. W. Deal of Union County received a certificate of probable cause, staying liberty pending appeal, with a $1000 bond.
Voters in the Eugene school district authorize the board to issue warrants totaling 25000 dollars. Funds will finance an addition to the high school and purchase sites for two new grade schools.
A Pendleton branch of the Bruin detective company, headed by Captain Patrick Bruin, will open with J M Manes as local manager. Bruin, formerly Portland detectives chief, is related to Judge Fitzgerald. Mrs Bruin visits for family ties and business. Pendleton HQ site not decided. Portland office remains in the Hamilton building.
