Real estate leaders from Pendleton area unite at a banquet and meeting to form an organizing body, elect officers, and plan a publicity drive to promote west end development. The gathering signals stronger cooperation among local business and professional leaders with aims to boost settlement and investment in the entire county.
The sheriff believes sufficient evidence exists to convict Bud Barnes of murdering Mrs. Aldrich whose body was found in a forest seven miles from Dixie Washington on Thursday. Barnes, unaware of the discovery, maintains he last saw her when he put her on a train at Waltsburg toward Walla Walla.
The County Central Committee met last evening with over 30 precincts represented. Delegates were elected to state and congressional conventions and directed to support Taft, while endorsing H. M. Cake for United States senator. Attending were committee members from Echo to Union, with Phelpa, Maha ney, and Barrett among guests.
Governor Chamberlain and a party of local Democrats traveled by three automobiles to the north part of the county at 9:30 this morning. He delivered five senatorial campaign addresses at Adams Athena Weston Freewater and Milton, then planned to address Pendleton at 2:30 PM and Echo at 8:00 PM tomorrow. Portland Oregon May 8 Edward Hugh Martin accused of murdering Nathan Wolff may be released as police say the investigation nears completion and evidence will be turned over to District Attorney Manning. The preliminary hearing is expected next week as key items lose strength and witnesses waver.
District Attorney believes Mrs. Gunness set her house ablaze and planted a woman's body to mislead investigators. Searchers unearthed two more corpses, bringing the known victims to eleven. One body could not be identified, another skeleton lay in a box with woman's shoes, all showing evidence of dismemberment.
Skidmore, a noted Pendleton swindler, evaded Idaho authorities after being arrested locally. The Moscow district court terminated the case on May 4, ruled evidence insufficient, and dismissed the state versus F. Skidmore. He had posed as a Grand Rapids Showcase Company representative and attempted to sell show cases while taking cash payments.
Mrs Hendryx mother of Henry T Hendry of Portland and Eg Hen dryx of Granite died in Portland yesterday after a paralytic stroke. Her remains were brought from Portland this morning and were taken to Weston for the funeral service. Both sons accompanied the body.
Hillsboro approves a 25 year franchise allowing Oregon Electric to build a street network. The company plans to extend its system across the Willamette Valley. It marks a major expansion for the utility as it wires more streets.
Early morning blaze in Atlanta's wholesale district destroyed about fifty buildings with an estimated value of 1.5 million dollars. Firefighters faced water shortage and a fierce four hour battle, with the origin undetermined. Insurance coverage is believed to be substantial.

A fire devastated the Ohto infirmary in Marietta on May day causing panic as inmates fled windows and others were trampled. Superintendent Young sustained serious burns and many inmates were injured as the building burned to the ground.
In New York May a life saved by grafting live rabbit skin to Antonia Maggio during injuries from a glue melting machine explosion at J G Glasby Lumber Co is described in a supreme court trial seeking 30000 damages. Dr Amoco testified Maggio was near death before the four hour operation left him crippled after six months.

Dr H W Coe announced at a Commercial association banquet that an electric railway will be built from the city through the Irrigated section to the Columbia River. His company is taking active steps, with engineer Lilly arriving from Portland to survey the Fur nish project, to establish a right of way and form a company to build the line.

William Brandt aged about fifty, a familiar figure in Saloon circles, killed himself in his Columbia lodging room by swallowing nearly a whole bottle of morphine. Blind and long addicted to drugs, he had wandered Pendleton for 25 to 30 years with little known of his family. His body lies at Baker & Folsom parlors, as friends raise funds for burial. Coroner recorded death by his own hand.
T H McDermott a private detective formerly with Inland Empire buys Sam and Brady, bloodhounds of Harry Draper, for 425 dollars. The transfer completed Monday per Spokane Chronicle. McDermott plans rapid deployment with sheriffs and railroads and aims to keep the dogs ready for immediate use. He may buy a Russian bloodhound trained to trail a man on a sidewalk.
The Astoria chamber of commerce complains to the state railroad commission about a freight rate increase on hay grain and potatoes between Astoria and Portland. The rate is said to have risen from 7 percent to cents per hundred.
A graduating class of five at Pendleton Academy will take final exams this week. Students listed include Russell Blankenship Jude Bentley Verva Roberts Alpha Maude Bentley and Verva Roberts Alpha. Commencement exercises are set for late May with Judge Stephen A Lowell delivering the graduating address on May 26. The baccalaureate sermon will be given jointly with Pendleton High School by Rev Kreuze of Whitworth College on May 24 at the Presbyterian church. Preparations for the year end are underway as class day and commencement events approach.
