City council declined to pass Sunday closing ordinance amid debate on enforcement. Mayor proclaims saloons will be closed Sunday, while district attorney may enforce state law. Council boosts pay for city officials and delays bidding on macadam paving as bids falter.
Acting District Attorney John McCourt stated the office will entertain complaints for violations of the Sunday closing law and other state statutes. He noted district attorney Phelps is away at Seaside and due back next week, while first priority is sewer and water repair and pursuing derelict property owners.
Bert Alender, a white man, is under arrest charged with taking Digear upon the reservation. Arrested days ago after a complaint by Agent McFatridge. Deputy Nicholson arrived to take charge as witnesses from the reservation are summoned for a preliminary examination before Commissioner John Haltey Jr.
Pittsburg July 18 at least nine people are dead after yesterday's cloudburst sweeping eastern Ohio and West Virginia. Drowned victims include Mrs Mary Bolyard and two children of McComber West Virginia Thomas Miller of Adama Mill Ohio Taylor Davis of Milliseville Ohio and John Kline of Connellsville Ohio. Also killed by lightning are Mrs Henry Smith of Upper Sandusky and J Pedra blown by blast from dynamite. Rail lines and property suffered extensive damage from water and wind.
Public spirit in Eugene leads to subscriptions totaling 860,000 dollars for a railroad westward from Eugene toward the Slualaw mouth, with funds to be sent to Eugene via Stephen Ciurver. The plan originally targeted the Medford Crater Lake extension, but after that route failed, Eugene residents backed the new proposal and surveys are expected to begin. Frank Michiels reports a crop yield of about 0 bushels per acre in the south Pendleton district, considered good for the area.

A fire at about 7:20 p.m. damaged the Carney Rome & Company butcher shop on Alta Street, confined mainly to the meat smoking room. The building, insured for 1500, sustained rear damage and smoke intrusion. the business remained open and serving customers the next morning, with no insurance claim on the shop itself.
Coroner Folsom ruled no inquest after investigating Nora Wade's death by self harm at her father’s Little McKay Creek home Tuesday evening. Henry Waite, Nora’s father, and Mrs. Hatton accompanied the remains to Heppner with other family members traveling from Pilot Rock. Deputy District Attorney John McCourt led witnesses. no further details emerged and no inquest was deemed warranted.

July 18 report: Alex Huber a Slee milkman of this city was shot dead by an unknown assailant last night. Police suspect the killing ties to a feud among nine milksmen in Portland the day before. Detectives are chasing the assailant crew involved.
Changes name to Anderson Rogers, a former bartender at the eltw, was arrested after passing a $19 worthless check drawn July Gund woe on the First National bank of Ula city to Jerse Shull of the Exchange saloon. Sheriff Taylor pursued him to Echo, where he was identified and taken into custody. He is about 24, light complexioned and smooth shaven, previously stringing at the Brewery saloon.
George Poeringer bought a large parcel of wheat land for 44000 dollars. The section 35, township 3 north, range 33 east lies southeast of Saxe station near the reservation. Sold by J M P Snyder, the property includes ranch equipment and stock. Poeringer will farm it alongside his existing holdings, a major deeded transaction for a single section.

The Inland Empire Wheatgrowers association reports over 400 000 sacks delivered, bulk sack savings, and aim for nationwide buyers with prices starting at 75 cents per bushel. Farmers hope more members join to supply sacks countywide next year.
Begin this Monday on the reservation as Harvester Mounding and Knight Trethers plan a combined harvest. Wheat is not fully ready yet, with barley crop priority in the vicinity.
