Robbers Blow Open East St. Louis Bank Safe

Six masked men held seven watchmen at the National Stockyards Bank in East St. Louis from seven last night to two this morning. They bound and gagged four guards, spent seven hours blowing the safe, and escaped with an amount estimated between 25,000 and 75,000. Five dollar gold pieces were scattered, but larger coins and cash were taken. Police and detectives pursued potential escape routes. no arrests reported.

Secretary Long to Resign in Spring Likely Crane Appointed

In New York a special election is held today for the Seventh congressional district to fill the Mull­er vacancy. Perry Belmont and Councilman Joseph O’Grady are the Democratic nominees from rival wings, while Roe of the split Republicans seeks victory. Montague Lesser, aligned with Belmont supporters, predicts a 25,000 vote plurality and a 2 cent majority for his candidate.

New York markets opened lower with wheat easing after yesterday’s advance.
