In Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania on February 18 eight oarloads of petroleum were to be ignited on the crest of the Susquehanna ice gorge at Kipper Run to melt and move the thirty mile long ice barrier. Large pools would be formed for laying railway tires as fires were lit, with nearby towns warned of possible flooding if the gorge persists.
W M Nash files suit against H L Chittenden and wife to recover 226 dollars plus 10 percent interest from December 24 1901, and costs. A mortgage security to be foreclosed and Lots 3 4 5 and 6 in Block 1 Holdmans addition to Adams to be sold. Halley & Lowell for plaintiff. News from Rome Tokyo and London report Japanese forces establishing a supply base at Elliott Islands near Liao Tong peninsula 75 miles from Port Arthur as part of plans to attack Port Arthur The dispatch notes Russian losses and quiet along the Yalu River with Chinese troops delayed departure for Manchurian frontier and various other war-related updates.
Reverend Johnathan Edwards of the Congregational Church extols the Christian Endeavor society as a global, interdenominational force. He notes its rapid rise from a small Portland Maine start 22 years ago to nearly four million members, its influence on youth and missions, and Pendleton Oregon hosting a state convention with 160 delegates.
In Baker City February 18 the Chloride Mining Company property including the oil, boarding, house and shaft houses were swept into a 200 foot deep canyon by a snow slide. The fall occurred about 2000 feet above the camp with a thunderous crash. no lives are known lost, and recovery will wait until spring melt.
The Utah supreme court affirmed the lower court ruling sentencing Charles Bothe known as Dutch Charley of Salt Lake City to be shot on November 17, 1902. He killed his young wife in a desert cabin two years earlier amid jealousy.
Fire destroys the 1768 Dartmouth College dormitory the oldest hall in America. Students form a bucket brigade to save nearby buildings. The damaged structure will be rebuilt on the original lines, preserving its link to the fourth oldest U.S. educational institution behind William and Mary Yale and Bowdoin.

Bitter Creek Wye Feb 18 The Union Pacific flyer again escaped a derailment as the westbound fast mall jumped the track. Rail spread four cars left the rails and several passengers suffered bruises though none seriously hurt.
Traveling evangelist Rev Tilford Boling returns from Pilop Rock and the Potty country where he preached to large audiences. He will deliver a sermon at the courthouse next Monday night and promises thrilling revelations to churchgoers on the scriptures.
Eugene Higgins and Decca M. Jones were married at the bride’s home 717 Marie Street this afternoon with Rev. N. H. Brooks officiating. They leave tonight for the cast. The body of William Atkinson, a young hunter missing near Eugene last Monday, was found by a searching party. He had frozen to death while trying to find his way home.

Nominations sent to the Senate include William Davis to Martinique and Cameron Forbes to the Philippine commission. The Crum nomination of the Charleston customs post is favored. Russia’s stance on the Hay note is noncommittal, while a Panama minister resigns. Marines are ordered east to join a battalion for the Philippines.
Sacramento February 18 river levels continue to drop with 21610 feet of water flowing over tracks between Honcut and Marysville. All danger of landslides at Cape Horn has been removed as authorities report improving conditions.
Baker City papers report gamblers fleeing District Attorney Halley arrive in the city as authorities pursue them.
A crowd of vagrants near the Crystal Glass works in Bridgeport Connecticut sparked a fight that broke a gas pipe, causing an explosion. Five severely burned and three fatally burned as a building caught fire but was put out. A tramp fell into molten glass and was incinerated with remains unrecognizable.
