Flood news from California reports the town near Redding nearly obliterated as thirty three inches of rain soaked farms. Cattle and houses washed away. Electric power and wires down. Water levels rising then slowly abating. Other towns in Tehama and nearby regions report washed farms and towns cut off. wells affected and power outages continuing.
The Spokane Sabbath association formed at First Baptist church plans a crusade against city saloons to force Sunday closures. Ministers argue saloons drive Sunday desecration and vow to strike at the alleged cause to remedy the effect in Spokane.
Salt Lake February 17. The Heber branch of the Denver and Rio Grande is blocked by a snow slide damming the Provo river. Freight traffic started over the Ogden-Lucerne cut across Salt Lake today and the cut-off opened by Harriman last Thanksgiving proceeded to operate after earlier track sinking halted service. The report also notes a negro farmers congress opening in Little Rock and a Lily White faction state convention in New Orleans preparing for future Republican national delegates.
In San Jose California on February 17 Mrs Hazelle Gorman stage named West faced a justice court charge of disturbing the peace related to a quarrel over Mack and Murray’s comedy aggregation. Mrs Mack testified of alleged attempts to steal her husband. witnesses described a dressing room confrontation. The judge offered fatherly advice and dismissed the case.
Chicago February 17 testimony in the Iroquois easter investigation tended to exonerate Mayor Harrison and question his culpability in the balance of a license before an examination as required by law. Before the fire the mayor proposed a conference of department heads that the building inspector carefully inspect all new theaters before approving their license. The mayor was unaware the inspector failed to do this in the Iroquois case. The evidence throughout was damaging to Building Inspector Williams.
Sydney reports say Dowie’s meetings drew a 6000 strong crowd amid rowdy conduct and mobbing. He escaped a pursuing crowd and slipped to his hotel through a back door as police failed to quell the disturbance. In Scranton the Young Men’s Christian Association marks fifty years of work with gatherings in major Pennsylvania cities.
Russian troops suffer across Siberia as Japan presses toward Manchuria. Port Arthur fortifications held after a torpedo strike on a warship in harbor. News notes Tokyo reports storms hindered a second attack and Russian defenses remained active.
The state Irrigation commission will meet in Portland on Tuesday February 25 at Snow and McCammant's office. YT G Halley will travel to attend the first session which aims to organize the body and plan drafting a suitable irrigation law with cooperation from the reclamation bureau.
Colonel M Lyons founder of the St Joe Store sells the Pendleton business to J B Whittinghill of St Joseph Mo. The store will close for invoicing and Whittinghill will take control on progressive lines. N S Savage will assist with invoicing before returning home.
Ek W McComas has leased 400 acres on Switzler Island to a La Grande sugar beet factory for a trial beet crop. The island sits 25 feet above river level with surface irrigation by pump. If the first crop succeeds, McComas may lease remaining land at a fair rate. Expert beet growers will be sent to oversee planting and ground preparation.
Helena theater audience last night missed popular actress Miss Florence Roberts in Zaza as doctor ordered rest after a Spokane tragedy. Manager cited Roberts illness and a doctor’s injunction. the event proceeded with a substitute or reduced program. Also in Paris, first Panama Canal hearing opened today on the republi can case against a Colombian.
Thieves broke into the Oregon Lumber Company office opposite the courthouse using a drilled lock opening the outside door. They blew the safe but only partly, scattering papers and leaving two pairs of overshoes and the last two cigars as the only apparent plunder. Two men are suspected as perpetrators.
One hundred fifty delegates are expected for the Y P S and C E Christian revival convention. Final plans include sending 150 dances to the committee on entertainment and publishing the full program tomorrow. Meetings occur at the palar church with a mass meeting at the opera house and a delegate reception at the Episcopal parish house. Rev Jonathan Edwards chairs the finance committee and is enthusiastic.

In Lansing Kansas on February 17 convict Gurney was identified as the notorious desperado Bill Randolph famed for a Union Bank robbery. He is also wanted in Missouri for murder of a Pinkerton detective and other crimes. Likely to be pardoned and sent to Missouri for trial. Gurney is serving time there for theft of 6 700 head of cattle.
