Mulkey Drops Out of Oregon Senate Race

Rare 1847 Alexandria Postmaster Stamp Sells for 4000

New York philatelists report a blue paper postmaster provisional stamp from 1847 sold by a Philadelphia dealer to George H. Worthington of Cleveland for 4000. Only blue paper specimen known. others are buff. Found among family letters in Alexandria by Mrs. M Fawcett. Critics say 5000 possible in England.

Malheur County Eyes Rich Oil Supplies

Malheur County residents say oil will reach markets soon. At Yale, Prof. W. S. Mayberry reports an oil well nine miles southwest of Yale is down 1800 feet and flowing about 10 gallons daily while machinery is purchased for deeper drilling. Samples sent to Portland and Pittsburg await test results as eastern Oregon developers fund further work.

Deserted Army Deserter Hayes Arrives in Pendleton

Harry Hayes alias Henderson, a deserter from the U S army and companion of Sergeant Edward Brown’s wife, arrives in Pendleton with her. Brown identifies Hayes and orders his arrest. Hayes to be taken to Walla Walla military court. Another deserter, John O Day, also captured for leaving his regiment. both face military court. Reward of 350 offered.
