In Salem Oregon Governor Chamberlain declares Steel lied about the state fund balance and states he would not credit Steel now with only 230000 on hand. He says it is his duty to ensure a good bond and protection for state funds amid bond and security concerns and solvent bonds among Steel's sureties.
Throngs throng stores and churches for Christmas programs across the city. The churches of Redeemer Presbyterians Christians and Baptists host trees carols and services this evening and tomorrow with dances armory events and public recitals. Charles Quinney rector invites families to attend and notes varied programs from 2 to 8 pm and later arrivals welcome.
Washington December 24 The jury in the manslaughter case against the GB&O train crew arising from the Tern Cotta wreck a year ago returned a verdict of not guilty Fifty three people were killed in the disaster
Memphis Savings Bank in Memphis Tennessee failed to open today. The bank had capital stock around 294000 dollars and deposits estimated at 1250000 dollars. Receiver E T McHenry says deposits will be paid in full.
Washington December 24 Rear Admiral Browneon chief of the Bureau of Navigation has tendered his resignation and it has been accepted by the president.
Seventy four bodies were found in a heap today at the entry of shaft Number 27 in Jacobs Creek Pennsylvania. This brings the total to 120 bodies recovered so far in the disaster.
