Annapolis Md December 24 1873 reports the formal resignation of General George Washingtons military commission after victory in the war Washington arrived December 19 was greeted by Gates and Smallwood at Mr Manns and spent the night in the room where his farewell ceremony occurred. He planned to resign within days and Congress set December 23 noon for the official act. Washington wrote Baron Steuben and helped a boy buy a hat after noting his hatless state. He left for Mount Vernon after the ceremony heading home for Christmas feasts.
