Cairo reports the completion of the Assuan Nile dam celebrated with ceremonies led by the Duke of Connaught and the Khedive. The 1 1/2 mile long dam has 181 sluice openings, 283 feet high gates, and will enable two crops a year, boosting sugar cultivation and reclamation. Construction by John Aird & Co. costs about 25 million dollars.
A Derby Connecticut boy James McSheehy aged 2 died after plunging into a tub of boiling water in a Shelton home. He reacted to his mother rebuking him and comforting his younger brother in the kitchen. The incident occurred during a quarrel between the siblings as the mother tended to the younger child. The child’s upper body was severely scalded and he died shortly after.
