In Rome on December 1 police dispersed a secret gathering of 19 anarchists as they swore oaths on police, one anarchist killed and an officer mortally wounded in the struggle. The group was overheard planning to assassinate the king. Also, La Grande obituary notes S P Romig, longtime local settler and agent for a stage company, died of stomach cancer.
A box of dynamite was carelessly handled and fell down a shaft at Lehigh colliery in Wilkesbarre Pennsylvania between and five o clock this morning. The explosion wrecked the lower portion of the mine, killing several men and injuring many more. Four bodies were recovered, nine seriously hurt, and about fifty sticks of dynamite were involved. The blast did not close the mine operations.
John Turner an Albany agent for the Corvallis and Eastern Railroad shot himself in the head yesterday evening amid heavy drinking. A note to his wife urged payment of all bills in his name and asked the Elks and Woodmen to care for his wife and child. The death was attributed to liquor. no other reason given. A separate dispatch from Washington reports the national chamber of commerce urging Congress to consider a bill for reorganizing the United States consular service, with a commitment to introduce it soon.
