Paris reports Romanian retreat from Bucharest with orderly evacuation as German forces and rebels scour cities. Civilians flee, villages looted by bands, railways disrupted, and mass captures mounted along the front.
Warden Murphy appoints Al Southwick as turnkey, succeeding Sam Burkeardt. Southwick’s reinstatement is viewed by his friends as complete vindication following his recent edict.
The Dalles reports Dr. Anderson of Wasco county retires from the race and will back Umatilla county man. Rep. R. W. Hitner now counts 42 votes as sure for Stanfield, with 31 needed to clinch, keeping a safe lead.
Angels section reports a daytime robbery at the corner of Sixth and Los Angeles streets. Two assailants blinded a Wells Fargo messenger with pepper spray and escaped with a bag containing gold and miscellaneous cash. Several witnesses observed the incident.
In Chicago on December 7 prices show a slight decline with May futures at 1.81 percent, 1.82 percent high, and 1.78 percent low. Portland reports Merchant Exchange bids for wheat around 1.48 to 1.59. Liverpool spot wheat remains firm with No 1 northern Manitoba at 2.65 per bushel and No 2 heard winter at 1.64.
G M Welsh of Washington won first prize for the Kent Percheron stallion at the Portland Stock Show. Jas Edson of Carton Oregon took second prize. E F Anderson of Albany bought a Golden Duchess cow from Frank Brown of Carlton for three hundred twenty dollars.
PARIS Dec 7 The allies will officially announce tomorrow a Greek blockade as reprisal for the Athena tide incident when Greeks attacked French marines.
Salem dispatch reports Labor Commissioner Hoff warning that exaggerated accounts of Portland shipbuilding have pulled workers from other trades and clogged the labor market. He notes many unemployed lack skills needed for improving prospects.
The deceased Mrs Samuel H Walker was born August 29, 1864 in Unley Illinois. She lived with her parents Cheleto Houser then moved to Oregon in 1848 before returning to Illinois to marry Samuel H Walker. They settled in Pendleton Oregon and later McKay Creek where they resided. Five children were born to them three survive Floyd Walker Mrs Paul Gilliland and Dorothy Walker of McKay Creek. She cared for a winter’s child Viola Hawke and left brothers Zoeth Houser Stanfield Ethel Houser Pendleton and Perry Houser Birch Creek and sisters Marion Meisenheimer Iron Mountain Montana and A J Black Pendleton.
A dispatch from Amsterdam via the Telegraph reports panic in Berlin after a home army bill passed, showing wives and servants protested outside Charlottenburg town hall against factory conscription. They demanded bread and a two day cease, while urging peace amid shortages and rising unrest.
In Walla Walla directors seek to forestall loss of fair grounds by arranging bids for timber and discussions to retain land through bonds. Jarvis Hurd veteran of the Civil War and Pineer resident died of heart failure at his aunt Earl Hurt’s home near Pilot Rock. Found in bed at 6 30 this morning he was a New York native and came west after the war. Survived by a daughter in California and two sons J Hurd and Furt Hurd. A prominent Mason and Wars master of his lodge last year. Funeral at Pendleton probably tomorrow with burial at Athena.
Washington Dec 7 Hastings of Nebraska offered a resolution in the House to appropriate 400 thousand dollars to investigate presidential and congressional election expenses. The House named Rucker Missouri Garrett Tennessee and McKinley Illinois to arrange Wilson's second nomination.
Ossington New York December 7 Inmates at Sing Sing have shortened work hours and extended recreation under wardens McClancy Osbhorne and Derrick. Work ends at three instead of four. Earlier, prisoners were confined most of the day except meals and limited classes. Recreation and education periods were extended so confinement is less than half of 1913 levels.
Queen the sheep dog owned by Coaching Baker of Walla Walla vanished on Sunday and was found today 110 feet deep in an abandoned well. Her mate Bob refused to move from tumble weeds and alerted workers, who lowered a man into the well to rescue Queen unharmed. Covers for the well are being arranged after the incident.
Dec 7 report from El Paso says Villistas hanged and tortured Howard Gray, foreman at an American owned Alvarado Mining Co. He was killed after entering Parral a month earlier. Washington December 7 The Associated Press learns that federal farm banks will declare a hundred million dollar bond issue probably in February. The issue will be in denominations from twenty five to a hundred dollars and will bear four and one half per cent interest.
The British House of Commons adjourned without a Lloyd George ministry announcement. Labor agreed to join the government after talks with Lloyd George, Bonar Law, Carson, and Henderson. Reports say two cabinet posts and several undersecretaries were offered, aiming to tighten the war cabinet to five members. Debates signaled a push for efficiency, with labor leaders resigning to support a unified war effort. French leaders also seek greater efficiency and a younger commander as Joffre’s possible retirement looms.
A sky display of sun dogs today indicates incoming cold weather. The atmospheric phenomenon, also called mock suns or purhella, forms from light refracted by ice crystals. Seen as rainbowLike arcs near the sun, they may appear on one side if ice crystals are perpendicular or above and below if horizontal.
