In Frankfort on August 20 Wallace Bishop Tom Mulligan and Lafayette Brooks, inmates serving life for murder, attempted a breakout in broad daylight. After two hours barricaded in a building the warden shot Albert Ransom as the desperadoes surrendered. Bishop then died after a staged surrender attempt. A major fire at William Hickey’s paint shop and adjacent Hotel Eastern property followed, driven by suspected spontaneous combustion. The blaze gutted the shop and barn with horses inside, causing extensive damage and heavy losses.
In Berling on August 20 Belgian automobilists including a count killed an old man and two children during a Rhine province drive. The enraged populace sought to lynch them but police rescued the travelers with difficulty.
The Iowa prohibition state convention met in Waterloo with J. G. Van Ness calling it to order. Delegates and visitors included many women. New York August 20 A heavy open car on the Union railway jumped the track at midnight while descending a hill at high speed. It turned over and plunged into a ditch killing W. H. Keyes and injuring many others, two probably fatally.
Samuel Seeley former cashier at the National Shoe and Leather Bank of Brooklyn who served a long prison term for a $250,000 theft has returned to New York a millionaire. He amassed his fortune in western mining ventures after his release.

Meridian Mississippi reports on August 20 that A M Byrd was nominated for Congress in the fifth district at the Democratic primary. The result confirms Byrd as the party’s congressional candidate.
Duryea Pa Aug 20 The Warnke Brothers washery resumed operations after a peaceful morning. Strikers gathered outside but caused no trouble as armed guards maintained a barbed wire barricade. Strike leaders urged non union workers to join, signaling a shift to peaceful methods despite tense undercurrents.
New York market notes the wheat sector near a low point for the period amid free selling on large estimates. Liverpool closes 0.5% higher, New York opens and closes at 7.2 cents, with modest range. Stocks higher with leaders St. Paul 1.86, Union Pacific 1.09, L. N. 1.57, Steel 4.1. Wheat in San Francisco at 1.13 1/2 dollars.

They sought work as fruit pickers in Fresno but found Chinese labor crowded out. The woman is about 20 with cropped brown hair, a slouch hat, overalls, jumper, and heavy shoes.
