Kansas City Aug. 16 reports say the state endures a thirteenth day of extreme heat driving business suspensions. Temperatures reach 108 with springs drying up. Water trains head to towns lacking supplies as residents abandon homes and camp near wells. Showers offer little relief. crops suffer widespread burn.
Five thousand employees of the British Columbia railway systems in Victoria Vancouver and New Westminster are voting on a strike. Arbitration reports have proposed accepting or rejecting the accord with a strike conditional on rejection.
El Paso reports indicate Didier Masson an aviator for the constitutionalists was captured by federals at Empalme when his engine failed and he was forced to descend above the town. The report is unconfirmed.
Roseburg Ore Quartermaster Sergeant 8 W Pearson won the Catron cup at the opening day of the national rifle matches at Camp Perry Ohio His score 103 led a field of 381 marksmen The cup valued at 500 includes a gold medal and cash Pearson must defend the cup next year.
Milton A. Miller took the oath of office as collector of Internal Revenue before Federal Judge Bean in Portland Oregon. He succeeds David M Dunne who held the office 15 years. Miller resigned as state senator to accept the collectorship.
A violent storm swept Manitoba and Saskatchewan bringing a sixty mile gale and heavy rain. Two deaths were reported as standing grain was flattened and buildings were demolished in several towns. Freight cars, telegraph lines, and trees were uprooted and damage is estimated in the millions.

Arthur Pelkey will fight Jack Johnson in Paris after manager Tommy Burns confirmed. Burns said he would accept on satisfactory terms and wants to settle Pelkey’s title claim, asserting a Johnson victory would crown him undisputed champion and restore supremacy to the White race.

A mysterious note to Frederick Steiner recounts a bear killed by lawyers Dan P. Smythe and an unnamed hunter in Gibbon Oregon. The animal measured 9 feet 4 inches and weighed about 950 pounds. The letter apologizes for returning without the bear and mentions a ramrod found near the scene.
Secretary of the Interior Franklin K. Lane will visit Pendleton Tuesday evening arriving from Hermiston. He will meet with local residents and Umatilla Indians to discuss the West Umatilla and Uma tilla water rights questions. A committee meeting is set for 7 30 pm to organize plans for his reception and entertainment. Albany August 16 Governor Sulger remains in the executive chamber as Lieutenant Governor Glynn acts as governor. Pressure grows for Glynn to eject Sulzer, but he refuses. Dual governorship likely to persist with violence talk rising among followers. Information on Mrs Sulzer's condition is being suppressed. she is reported very ill and unable to sleep without opiates.
Work on the O W R N line between Pendleton and Walla Walla involves upgrading 65 pound rails to 80 pound steel. Crews are installing ties and ballast, with completion expected in the late fall. East bound trains now routing via the Columbia and Riparia line may switch to this line once finished.
Mrs. Rose Winchell, 40, was killed and Anna Phelps was seriously injured early today when a car driven by Charles Carns of Tacoma left the road near Allentown and struck a stump, overturning. Carns was slightly injured and H. D. Williams, a fourth occupant, was unhurt. Both women lived at Centralia.
