Grain Rate Cut Promises Big Savings for Inland Empire Farmers

The Inland Empire grain freight rate reduction, effective now, is expected to save farmers about 800000 annually by lowering transport costs along Oregon Railroad Navigation Company lines and the Northern Pacific and Great Northern routes. While only a 10 percent cut from prior rates, the move could elevate local wheat prices and spur increased shipments, with a prior 25 percent lumber and garden produce cut noted earlier. Athena Press reports farmers foresee price upticks and rail movement, while a post office relocation petition circulates on the corner of Third and Jefferson, faced with debates over moving from Matin Street due to the current building’s dilapidation.
