Washington August 2 chairman Flood of the house foreign affairs committee said he acted at the president's request in barring Ambassador Wilson from appearing before the committee. Flood described the ambassador as a bitter Huerta partisan and reports a peremptory order was issued directing him to keep silence on Mexican affairs.
President Wilson accuses certain congressmen of seeking the limelight to embarrass efforts to restore order in Mexico. A push to revoke an arms embargo fuels tensions as revolutionary leaders, previously favoring mediation, reconsider their stance. The senate seeks information on Americans imprisoned, injured, and fined in Mexico, with plans to reveal names and locations Monday amid many amendments.

He said bluejackets will land only on an extraordinary occasion amid limited details of the Castro revolution.
In Baker Aug 2 a surprise reunion occurred between J A Walters of Farmington Washington and Abe Eaton a wealthy Union county landowner. They had not seen each other since 1869 when Walters arrived in La Grande from Illinois and Eaton freighting through The Dalles and Walla Walla. Walters recalled hauling gold from Bannock and gifting Eaton a gold brick valued at 100. Walters later moved to Pendleton and Farmington. Eaton became a leading figure in La Grande and Union County.
In Baker Oregon on August 2, Sidney Lawser, about 20, was attempting to board a west bound train at high speed when he fell under the wheels. Surgeons amputated his injured arm at the hospital yesterday. He was traveling from the east toward Pendleton to meet his brother Thomas, who lives there.
Seattle officials rejected in a unanimous vote the damage claims filed by the socialists and TI W for property destroyed during the July 18 riot. Police protection had failed per mayor’s recommendation, with total claims reaching 4865 to date.
Special agent G Raymond and three others, including J L Mott Ernesto Fernandez and Y Artega of the Mexican constitutionalist junta, were arrested on blackmail charges after accused extorting 500 dollars from Emmanuel Brito former Campeche governor. Washington August 2 The Senate foreign relations committee will act favorably on Secretary Bryan's Nicaragua treaty but will drop the protectorate proposal. It adopted a resolution asking redraft of the measure. Nicaragua representatives here privately approve the treaty granting America perpetual rights to build a canal for 3,000,000 and a 99 year lease for a naval base at Fonese Bay Great Corn and Little Corn islands.
Umatilla county grain growers anticipate benefit from Secretary McAdoo's plan to set aside 25 to 50 million dollars of government funds for deposits in banks across the west and south to ease crop moving during tight credit. Bank officials offer mixed views on local impact, with optimism for broader confidence but questions about regional deposits and bond pricing.

Aug 2 Northwest report warns of poorly executed counterfeit notes circulating in the Pacific Northwest. The fakes are drawn on First National Banks of Bellingham Burlington and Kent Washington and are said to be easily detected by consumers and banks.
In Toll Gate district bears are more numerous than usual as locals camp nearby. William Russell shot a bear weighing about 400 pounds yesterday. C G Rogers killed another around two miles from Toll Gate on Thursday. the bear weighed roughly 450 pounds.
Washington August 2 Democrats on the house banking and currency committee closed and re printed the administration currency bill after five weeks of stormy discussion. A formal vote to recommend the measure to the caucus will be held Monday. Disapproval by at least three members seems certain. The bill keeps government control of the federal reserve board and the new banking and currency system as outlined by Glass Owens McAdoo and Wilson.
Three divisions of government troops left Canton today to engage northern rebels. Indications point to a decisive battle though Canton is not expected to be jeopardized. Dispatches report a $40,000 price on rebel governor Chen Chung Ming and that government forces are marching toward Canton. Chinese residents flee to Hong Kong as trade stalls and foreigners stay relatively safe.
A fire from a hot box burned the stationary thresher of Ely Enbysk at Stage Gulch, destroying about five acres of grain and seriously injuring F. O. Walman the separator tender. Insurance covers the loss at 698 dollars with payment made by Queen Insurance Co. Walman received burns to hands and face and was treated in Pendleton. Enbysk, who also faced last year’s loss of a stationary thresher, plans to buy a combined harvester.

Aug 2 The King County Humane Society reports a letter from Secretary of War Garrison promising to stop shipping game cocks on government transports bound for the Philippines. The society says the birds were routinely shipped to amuse soldiers on voyages.
In McMinnville Oregon area eight miles west, Walter Rogers aged 26 was shot dead and Frank Wilbur aged 24 wounded when James Tiutchins confronted them on the road. Wilbur and Hutchins argued, Hutchins fired four shots wounding Wilbur while Rogers on horseback tried to move to safety. Hutchins discharged a final shot killing Rogers. The sheriff is en route to the scene to investigate.
In Cordova Alaska on August 2 about 110 gold seekers left for McCarthy to reach the Shushanna gold field via Ekolal Pass. They moved three horse cars and four supply cars. Prospector Seike Muller and another man named Bone reported that the new diggings cover about 15 square miles of rich placer ground.
Salem Oregon August 2 Governor West appointed Dexter Rice of Roseburg county judge in place of Judge Wonnacott who resigned.
Oregon treasurer reports Umatilla County schools will receive 12921.63 this year, up from 12618.24 last year. The allocation is based on 1.83 per pupil with about 250 more pupils. District and county taxes plus liquor fines supplement revenue, county tax set at 1.34 mills yielding about 75000, with state and county funds apportioned to districts.
