Five Japanese argoonauts detained after perilous Pacific voyage
Eureka Califonria August 4 Five Japanese argoonauts the last of a party of nine who crossed the Pacific in an antiquated junk last week landed five miles from here and were arrested Saturday by Deputy Immigration Inspector Nicholls. The men were in a weakened condition from the hazardous trip and from near starvation since landing. One is said to be dying. They camped on berries while fleeing east into the hills. The junk and crew show signs of a long voyage with a 590 foot trail craft, two masts, sleeping compartments for 10, a map of Japan and other gear found aboard. Three were caught at Big Lake and two at Blue Lake. Continued on Page 6.

Auto Smash on West Court Leaves Cars Wrecked
A collision on West Court Street Saturday night between a Winton driven by John Mumm and a Ford taxi owned by Robert O’Neil left the Winton a total wreck and the taxi badly damaged. Damages are estimated at 500 dollars for the Winton and 50 to 75 dollars for the taxi. The wreck occurred near the gravel pile in front of the Smith property where a new residence is under construction, about fifty feet west of Garden Street. O’Neil was westbound with a passenger when Mumm, eastbound, approached the curbside. There was no further detail available.
