New York Aug 1 Bankers report surprise at Secretary McAdoo's order to place from 25 million to 360 million in government funds with banks to aid the movement of crops. Heads of financial houses say western and southern banks faced no unusual strain and that financial arrangements nationwide progress well with banks in good condition.
In Washington on August 1 Senator Catron of New Mexico warned that passing the Underwood bill would trigger a panic and ruin the wool and sheep industry. He urged that only a law authorizing $600,000,000 in emergency currency could avert the worst effects seen in 1904 and 1905.
Edward Parson Weston, a famed pedestrian, is due in Minneapolis at 6:30 this afternoon completing his trek from New York. He will be greeted by Governor Eberhardt and city officials in St. Paul.

In Barcelona on August 1, police estimated about 22,000 operators from 196 factories are on strike after workers rejected the governor's call for a conference.
