The Nose of Minnesota and the North Boundary Cornice

The United States holds a small 1090 square mile corner north of the forty-ninth parallel due to a 1783 boundary agreed near Lake of the Woods. Surveys found the point about twenty five miles north of the line, creating a jog in the border that leaves a sliver of U.S. land accessible mainly via Canada. The piece is often joked about as a water-only reach unless one travels through Canada. We thank friends for kindness after bereavement. Mrs. Fannie Lee and son Charles
