A local editorial urges residents to file or circulate petitions for the upcoming November 7 municipal election. With no candidates yet and few issues likely, it advocates encouraging capable neighbors and even women to run. Deadline is October 10 and civic service outweighs monetary gains.
A Lake City note recounts a minister recalling his first church experiment. He announced a sermon on liars and asked how many had read Matthew chapter 35, counting 59 raises. He revealed there is no 35th chapter, using humor to challenge falsehood.
Central opened its 1951 football season at Cape Girardeau Missouri by winning a close game against Southea Teachers College Central’s lone touchdown came on a pass from Dick Long to Cliff Crandall. Mary Nella Hoksbergen, daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Hoksbergen of Leighton is described as a sophomore in Pella High School who was struck by a bicycle ridden by Jimmie Roorda on the sidewalk in front of Paardekooper drug store, suffering a broken leg and a bruised face and arm.
The Pella Construction Company opened a ready mixed concrete plant on rail car track delivery across town marking the first such service in Pella. A Sept 18 trade swapped real estate between Don Douwstra and Bert Van Ee. A teen purse mystery ends with Martha Kelly rewarding Wilma Rus for honesty. $78 recovered. Navy and army notices place Marion Bay on Guam, Kenneth Van Brogen in Great Lakes hospital, Leonard Pol finishing Ft. Leonard Wood training and awaiting Europe, Howard Jaarsma graduating cook school.
An all day benefit auction organized by the Sul ly Commercial Club and local groups raised 5 621 31 for Jasper county tornado victims from Killduff Sally and Lynnville areas. Donations of livestock grain goods and merchandise poured in with items resold at auction including a white billy goat auctioned eighty times.
Edward Payne of this city attended the Grand Army reunion in Des Moines as one of the few surviving Civil War veterans. He recalls enlisting around age 16 or 17, serving two enlistments totaling four years, and witnessing patriotic fervor in 1861. Payne’s unit, Company K of the 48th Pennsylvania Infantry, marched from Camp Curtin to fortress points, fought at Bull Run and Antietam, and endured heavy losses.
South Mountain on the 14th and 17th of September loomed as actions. Mr. Payne was wounded at Antietam. From there the regiment moved forward with reports of casualties and marching orders, linking Sharpsburg campaigns to later maneuvers.
In commemoration of the Civil War centennial The Chronicle urges readers to submit pictures or any information about former Pella residents involved in the 1860s conflict for publication. All items will be returned intact to owners.
The account traces a soldier named Payne from the Battle of Fredericksburg through Civil War campaigns in Kentucky Tennessee and the Army of the Potomac. It covers hospital stays in 1863 1864 re enlistment 80 day furlough major battles including the Wilderness Spottsylvania Cold Harbor and Petersburg siege and mining mine construction and supply details. He describes hardships such as two ears of corn per day and lack of clothing while guarding rail lines and marching 200 miles to Knoxville.
Dan's prisoners from Burkeville to Nottingham court house were mustered out on July 19, 1865. Of 2000 in Mr. Payne's regiment only 27 remain, and of 200 in his company only four survive. He has visited battlefields repeatedly and recalls the roll calls with wounding, killed, or missing. He notes graves and marches, reflects that eighty seven years pass quickly yet offer hope for the future. His general health is good, and he may reach the century mark. One escaped boy who ran away died on Mr. Payne's knee.
The LP.T.C. 4-H club met on September 11 at the Legion Hall and elected new officers. Keith De Heus is president, Ron Bensink vice president, Loren Kuiper secretary treasurer, and Mary Ver Meer reporter. Gerrit Van Hamlen, Mike Nollen and Harold Ver Meer will again lead as leaders. Next month features Family Night with all parents invited. Meetings will start at 7 30 p.m. in November. Lois De Haan was the reporter.
