Bypassed Communities Thrive in Local Retail Shift
A five year South Dakota study of Tripp shows bypasses divert through traffic but boost local retail. After Route 37 relocation in 1957 58 traffic to the business district rose to 40 percent while through traffic fell 17 percent. Gasoline sales fell but overall retail volume rose as service stations and hotels retained business. Local population declined slightly yet taxable retail sales increased over 1956.
