A fragment describes a dining scene where guests converse minimally and a circulating dish system operates without waiters. It credits M. Georgia Knap, an electrician in Paris, as the inventor, noting a sense of grievance over tipping and highlighting foreign origin.
A German cabinet maker builds water shoes from pine boxes with bowlike fronts and rudder paddles. By pushing his feet alternately the inventor glides across Lake Ammer in Bavaria in two hours, using upright posts for balance. The device works on smooth water and is lighter than rowing, though not suited for storms. The inventor uses it daily to transport tools and baggage across the lake.
A dentist faced a hollow tooth in a Rio de Janeiro elephant and could not pull it alone. Thirteen men joined 15 keepers to pull the tooth with a rope and platinum wire. The elephant endured the fourth pull with pain and anger, then calmed after its tooth was removed.
Charles Carter, a 26 year old laborer and son of an English bookmaker, was elected mayor of Mouffy near Auxerre in Yonne. His election sprang from a joke and he faces calls to resign, but he remains determined to stay in office. Carter is a naturalized Frenchman who cannot speak English.
Mrs Daniel Hornbeck of Milford New Jersey carried a sewing needle in her foot for thirty years. A chiropodist in Newton removed the needle while treating a severe toe ache. The needle had embedded in the bone after she stepped on it as a child near Dingmans Ferry.
New York reporters recount wild scene as William Conklin ex press messenger claims four rattlesnakes in a shipment car plus three bodies a crate of chickens and half a dozen crates. He describes fighting the snakes all night while Andy Patterson corroborates. Passengers swarmed the car but saw no snakes.
An account describes four rattlesnakes entangling a lamp bracket aboard a speeding train. The rider, Bill, fought them with an email package and lighted matches, chasing the snakes as they fled into chicken crates. Andy from the next car drove off the danger, and the reptiles reportedly fed on chickens as the ordeal continued.
