Alabaster Sphinx Unearthed Near Memphis Egypt
The accompanying photo shows a 14 foot high, 26 foot long alabaster Sphinx weighing ninety tons carved from a single block. Found on the marshy Memphis road to Sakkareh, the statue is believed to date about 1300 B C, nearly contemporaneous with Set I sarcophagus in Sir John Soane Museum.
