Protein costs drive ration choices for dairy cattle
Iowa State professor Wwight Espe says protein is the priciest part of livestock rations. He notes grass silage from early cut alfalfa, clover, oats, or timothy provides more protein than corn or sorghum, enabling lower priced concentrates. Legume silage reduces hay needs and raises milk carotene, while silage replaces hay or corn silage with careful protein levels. Milk color reflects carotene intake but not a reliable feed-to-milk rule.
