Corn Picking On A Cold Fairfield Morning On The De Geus Farm

Friday morning locals reported hard dry corn harvest on the Neal De Geus farm north of New Sharon road near Pella. H P Meppelink worked the field in biting wind, noting better results with a modern machine and that much stalked corn was salvageable with slight gleaning. The De Bruin home nearby on the Old Home Place, kept in good repair, illustrates farmstead upkeep and legacy in the area.

De Bruin Farm Uses Soil Conservation and Hybrid Corn

The De Bruin family maintains soil conservation by mixing alfalfa, sweet clover, and soybeans and by shaping waterways to reduce overflow. Roy De Bruin grows open pollinated corn and five hybrids, noting tall stalks and uniform ears with yields near ninety bushels and potential over one hundred in a crowded hill. The farm spans about 106 acres with livestock feeding on grain and a child named Glenn Theodore. Increased wildlife visits are noted on drought-era reservoirs, and soybeans are projected as Iowa’s fourth major grain in 1939. Oleo margarine tax receipts dropped 61 percent in the first nine months of 1939 compared to 1938.

Picker Asks No Favors In Corn Harvest

A man ponders the effort of stooping to pick corn as a mechanical picker handles the task with ease though it leaves some ears. H. P. Meppelink led the outfit last weekend on the Neal De Geus farm assignment.

Grain prices and farmer selling advice in Grinnell Herald

The Grinnell Herald reports that supply and demand laws imply current grain prices won’t persist. It urges farmers with unsealed corn for sale to act now, noting prices may be inflated or kept down arbitrarily due to weak demand. It questions future demand for wartime food aside from beef and pork production.

Insects in grain bins a problem for farmers this fall

Town farmers face storage woes from weevils and grain borers as they shell and reseal corn. Entomologist Geo Decker notes three damage types: consumption, heating and spoilage, and lower market grade. Clean storage, proper granary prep, and timing of fumigation are advised, with help from county agents and the Iowa State Extension Service.

Chinch Bugs Damage Southern Iowa Corn, Dr Drake Says

Chinch bugs damaged corn across southern Iowa this season with infestation heavier than grasshoppers. Dr Carl J Drake of Iowa State College notes heavy bug presence in the three southern tiers and now farther north, with dry fall weather aiding their spread even before the November survey.

Outlook for Land Values in Iowa Uncertain

Iowa State College extension agricultural economists say land values have been steady for four years but the near term is uncertain. If war continues higher farm prices may lift land values. The USDA index shows Iowa land value at about 88 dollars per acre, 74 percent of 1912-14 value, with US land values declining slightly last year.

Land values in Iowa show mixed shifts since 1936

Economists note the average Iowa farm land value has changed little since 1936 but regional shifts occur. High quality land tends to hold or rise slightly while poorer land tends to slip. Areas hit hardest by the 1934 and 1936 droughts still suffer from reduced farm income.
