Richland township soil conservation committee met at Peoria Township Hall to sign up farmers for benefits. Four hundred seventy farmers out of 160 cards had been distributed. Ernest Steenhoek Wins Corn Husking Contest at Union Mills
Ernest Steenhoek, a left handed corn picker from near Leighton in Mahaska county, won the corn husking contest on B. K. Knowles farm near Union Mills held Friday of last week. Mrs. Walter Plate of Fremont led the women with 323.4 pounds in twenty minutes, placing first among six competitors. Mrs. Plate had placed third in the county last year. Mrs. Elvan Howard of New Sharon, last year’s winner, dislocated a finger early but finished the contest.
