In Keota a English Shepherd named Beaver will be awarded a Courage medal for saving young Richard Fosdick from a trampling bull last summer. The medal from the American Humane Association will be presented by Congressman C W Ramseyer at a public ceremony.
J F Brown of Hartford found a rock near McCormick place that resembled maple sugar. In Hart ford a Tribune representative viewed the specimen and it was taken to Indianola for study by Dr Louise Fillman and Dr Baker. Plain language suggests Indian use as a hide scraper or skinning tool, quartzite with a fused sandstone composition noted.
Eddyville physician Dr. R. F. Shanan aged 58 hanged himself in a barn at his home after years of failing health. The body was found by his wife as he did not return for breakfast. Coroner and sheriff said no inquest will be held. Survived by widow and son Russell.
The Iowa Highway Commission began a four county oiling project along US 34 in southern Iowa. Melrose Russell Woodburn and Murray will receive gravel beds oiled to connect with the highway under the supervision of district engineer W C Price of Chariton.
Armstrong Paving Construction of Des Moines furnishes the oil for an experimental road treatment. The oil, used with a gravel top, is applied on the Russell stretch about 1.3 miles long after successful tests in other states.
Monroe County News reports Albia has opened a municipally operated lodging house in the city hall tool house. Ten bunks, five deep, line two rows up to the ceiling to provide temporary shelter for winter transients. Beds are raw with wire fencing springs. guests supply bedding. Mayor Griffin says the city will be welcoming but require proper behavior.
A bolt of lightning struck Marl Smith's barn near Newbern Thursday evening during a rare electrical storm. One horse was killed outright while a small fire started and was extinguished by heavy rain. Five cattle and several other horses inside the structure were unharmed.
Mike Deimerly, a Sigourney man, is seriously hurt after a wagon collision with a team. He reportedly suffered five broken ribs a punctured lung crushed lung a broken arm and other injuries and may die from the accident though the report details are incomplete.
A man formerly from Sigourney, now living on a Keokuk County farm near North English, and his son Ervin were struck by a car driven by Joe Lindsey of North English while driving home Saturday around eight. Mike Deimerly was thrown fifteen feet, Ervin injured, one horse killed, wagon destroyed, Lindsey’s car badly damaged. Mike is Joe Deimerly’s brother.

Nordlund on the cure to education’s harm by uniting spiritual and natural learning yet argues public schools cannot provide true religious instruction. He declares the partial Bible class plan unsatisfactory and cites the danger of state taught religion.
Rev Paul De Koekkoek argues public schools fail to unite natural and spiritual aspects. He advocates private schools run by like minded parents and teachers as the only solution, questioning whether the goal is saving the institution or education itself. He ends with a plug for Chronicle typewriter ribbons.
