Former Sigourney Girl Has Close Call
Betty Yerger 13 daughter of Mr and Mrs Cecil Yerger of Texas formerly of Sigourney was attacked by a Portuguese Man of War while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. Tentacles wrapped around her arm causing loss of consciousness. Father and friend freed her with sand applied to unwind the tentacles. A physician on the beach treated her and she is recovering. Grandmother Mrs Anna Yerger was informed of the affair.

Rush Work On No. 2 Paving Job In Madison County
The Des Moines Asphalt Paving company has poured the last concrete on highway No. 2 between Winterset and Greenfield. Dirt will be removed once cement cures, with traffic expected to use the new pavement by September 19 or 21. Road detour routes were updated, four and a half miles west then north and west to reconnect with the new paving. The firm will ship machinery from Winterset this winter and no other jobs are scheduled. Some workers remain on road shoulders for several weeks.

Rail and Truck Hauling Compared by August Shipments
A prominent stock feeder shipped 28 head by rail weighing 25 360 pounds with 590 pounds shrinkage. Eight head were sent by truck on the same date, 7 000 pounds before shipping and 6 290 on sale, shrinkage 710 pounds. Rail sold at 8 25 per cwt and truck at 7 35, with losses per head totaling 18 14 for the truck load and 105 12 overall. Losses due to shrinkage, rate, yardage, and commission favored rail.
