Applicants For S. C. Benefits See Rising Claims

Marion County residents filed nearly five times more federal social security applications in early 1957 than in early 1956, as farm coverage expanded. The SSA district office in Des Moines reports longer interview waits but cites steps to speed processing, including temporary staff from coasts, overtime, and nine extra personnel. By May 1 the backlog fell from about 4500 to just under 1200, though work remains heavy.
