A long, rambling reminiscence weaves Mother's Day memories through visits to Joe Templeton's and Blanche Templeton's homes, garden tours, and car rides to see flower beds, notable houses, and old crossroads. It notes family gatherings, 4-H events, local illnesses, a half million bushel elevator story, and community reminiscences spanning toadstool gardens and rural roads.
Mrs. Vina Renaud returns home after almost three weeks in hospital for high blood pressure and complications. Daughters and kin visit. Blanche Newby is critically ill in Chehalis Washington. mail addressed to her care of her sister. Various local visitors hostesses and club activities noted including the View's Club May basket exchange and Stanley party events. Weekend guests from Milford and nearby towns visit Anne Terpstra family. Ollie Terlouw honored by relatives.
Seven weeks of activity unfold as Jimmy plays in a Knoxville band and tulips bloom during Tulip Time. Visitors include Mr and Mrs Allen De Heer with Linda, Clifford and Kenneth Simpson and families for Mother's Day, Mrs Sam Nichols in hospital, and local gatherings at Langstraat and Rietveld homes. An all white robin with a red breast is seen by Howard Rankin in Dayton where he teaches.
The Queen Esther Circle birthday celebration at the First Church Reformed included a cooperative dinner for self invited guests. Mrs Cliff Crews was honored for her birthday with a cake baked by her daughter in law. Attendees included Floyd De Boer Connie Beverly David New Sharon Clyde Lisk Alan Jill Vernon Jay Beth Cliff Crews Arl Crews and Bradley.
Miss Lizabeth Newenhouse invited the ladies of the congregation to a May 17 evening meeting. Special guest Miss Dorothy Sytsma from Africa shared slides and described her work. Various locals visited, hosted parties, and attended services across Oskaloosa and nearby towns, including Cedar, Leighton, Fremont, Toddville, and Chariton, with multiple family gatherings noted.
Thirty students form the first graduating class of the Sully Lynnville district. Graduation exercises are set for tonight May 23 at the First Reformed Church of Sully. Rev. William C. De Jong of Pel In will deliver the address. Activities began with the play Me and My Shadow at the Lynnville schoolhouse. Junior-senior banquet was at the Fort Des Moines Hotel. skip day included a trip to Chicago. Class officers are Howard De Penning president Larry Craver vice president Sherma Blom secretary and Caroll Hart hoorn treasurer.
Kenneth Robus was among 12 best essay winners receiving a ticket for a June Mark Twain Rail Excursion. The Burlington train departs Knoxville at 4:35 am, arrives Hannibal at 11:00 am, with a noon luncheon at the Mark Twain Hotel and a return from Hannibal at 4:45 pm.
Congratulates James M. Van Vliet Jr of Otley for top senior status in the University of Iowa College of Law. Otley Amvet Auxiliary met at the school basement with Miss Doris Lee as hostess. Clergy and church notes, neighborhood visits, condolences to Kool and Willemsen families, Lamp Lighters program, and local social updates are reported, including arrivals, illnesses, and a new baby girl in the Van Haaf ten family.

On May 2 1890 a brilliant meteor roared across the sky then exploded over Winnebago County about 11 miles northwest of Forest City. The event left a long trail of sparks and a black smoke plume, showering a 3 to 4 mile by 1 to 2 mile area with meteorites as residents watched from outdoors during spring weather.
