Use 2 4 D and 2 4 5 T To Kill Leafy Spurge
Leafy spurge can be controlled in sections of Iowa where found, says Otto Hoffman, extension weed specialist at Iowa State College. The weed is persistent, surviving four corn cultivations due to a strong lateral root system. It is listed as primary noxious under Iowa weed and seed laws, banning sale of seed containing leafy spurge. It requires two years of treatment or control measures.

Fallowing and Spraying Tactics for Leafy Spurge Control
The guide advises fallowing to deplete leafy spurge, mowing after Memorial Day to prevent seed set, and late May to mid June sowing of sorghum or soybean after plowing. It cites 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T mixtures as effective, with two sprays reaching about 90 percent control, followed by annual follow ups. Borascue applications in late May to August can achieve total kill but leave soil unsuitable for plant growth for about a year.
