Hog shelter design and farming life at Mahaska county farm
Carl Tysseling and his father operate a 130 acre Mahaska county farm near Pella designing a multi feature hog shelter. They raise about 550 pigs annually with four farrowings per year. Sows are Duroc Hampshire crosses and boars alternate. They rely on self produced gilts for herd replenishment and market pigs at 215 220 pounds. Cattle include Angus, Herefords and Shorthorns with 36 head raised yearly. He plans gradual housing changes and uses central hog shed with open pens to reduce mud exposure. The operation emphasizes cheap gain and forage based feeding with alfalfa and limited corn. The farm blends pasture, orchard, and row crops with soil and lime testing guiding rotations. Carl and Mary have two daughters, Laura and Carol.
