Pella Hollanders shaped by local issues in early politics
Bob Swierenga described Pella s political history to the Women s Federated Club, detailing how Dutch settlers led by Dominic Scholte aligned with Whig and later Democratic factions amid conflicts with locals. He linked Prohibition and anti immigration sentiment to shifts in party support, noting a strong Dutch Democratic tilt by 1859 and that local issues rather than national slavery concerns dominated voting behavior.
