Diphtheria Reduction Marks Public Health Triumph
Iowa cut diphtheria deaths from an average of 242 per year before 1925 to 34 in 1929 through immunization of most children. The six-year decline reflects coordinated effort by the State Department of Health, doctors, nurses, and volunteer groups like PTA, Red Cross, Farm Bureaus, and clubs. Despite progress in these diseases, overall public health funding remains limited in the state.
