Trees Damaged by Drouth Need Push
Shade trees weakened by drought can be helped with fertilizer. Ed Cott, Town State College horticulturist, says apply complete fertilizer by tree diameter from now on. Rates vary by diameter, with 1 to 4 pounds per inch for small trees and up to 3 pounds for larger ones, using 9 to 12 percent nitrogen or 5 to 6 percent nitrogen depending on product. For 6 to 12 inch trunks, rates are 2 to 3 pounds per inch. Place fertilizer on soil and work in, using ringed holes around the tree at set distances and depths to maximize uptake.

Prevent Rose Diseases With A Spray Program
A rose spray program may save your roses from two diseases that could seriously damage them, says Mal Shurtleff, Iowa State College plant pathologist. The diseases are rose black spot and powdery mildew, common pests of the rose. Black spot shows up in early June with brown or black spots on leaf uppers, eventually yellowing and dying leaves. Powdery mildew appears in early summer as grayish mold on leaves and thrives in damp weather. Regular fungicide spray treatment can keep both diseases in check, with captan or ferbam recommended for black spot and Karathane or related fungicides for powdery mildew.
