Long Terrace System Near Knoxville Aids Farm Soil

Terraces nearly a half mile long are being built on Ralph Shivvers farm about five miles west of Knoxville on Highway 92. The two terraces measure 2700 and 2300 feet, possibly the longest in Marion county and perhaps the state. They divert rainfall, reduce Gullies, and create grassed waterways to combat soil loss on the old Des Moines road route. Soil technicians Eels and Chandler helped plan and direct work, delayed by rains but ongoing with tractors and equipment on site.
