Immunization Against Diphtheria Shows Benefit
During the period there were 1210 deaths from diphtheria an average ratio of cases to one death in quarantine for fourteen days. This resulted in a loss of 695 years of time over five years. Preschool patients lost school time forcing repetition of the year and higher community costs. A statewide immunization program started in 1923 showed merit as deaths per year declined from 1925 to 1928.
Diphtheria Deaths Plummet Due to Immunization Efforts
The report credits immunization and parental cooperation for a dramatic drop in diphtheria deaths in 1929 to 34, a rate of 1.4 per 100,000, from an expected 240 if five-year averages held. It notes three injections after six months protect over 95 percent, lasting years, and urges universal immunization by age one. Data cover Iowa communicable diseases for May 22, 1930, with statewide totals for diphtheria, smallpox, measles, whooping cough, meningitis, chickenpox, tuberculosis, undulant fever, gonorrhea, and syphilis.
