Fire Danger Greatest In Late Summer and Fall
Town State College assistant extension forester Richard Crowther notes late summer and fall from August to November bring most woodlot fires. Last year Iowa logged 1,110 acres burned in 18 fires, partly due to debris burning and smoking. He urges careful rubbish burning near woodlots, smoking diligence in woods, and 4 to 6 foot fire lanes around plots. Iowa has three state fire protection districts with volunteer wardens and crews, plus 30 state park custodians for patrols.
