Blind intersections trap Iowa motorists with corn and weeds
The article describes a seasonal trapping method at rural intersections using tall corn and overhanging weeds to create blind corners that obscure oncoming traffic. It notes drivers near the trap often crash when another car enters simultaneously and warns that many trapped motorists live nearby and may ignore the danger or destroy the trap by cutting corn.

To Let Contract For Widening 163 in Ames Next Month
The Iowa State Highway Commission plans a major 80 mile highway modernization project stretching from Prairie City to Oskaloosa on 163 and from Oskaloosa to the Wapello county line and US 62 to be let in Ames next month. Sen. C Emory Stewart received word on July 19 from Robert Beck, new highway board member, that Governor Hoegh ordered widened pavements to 24 feet nationwide, signaling likely expansion of 163 and US 63 through Oskaloosa. The project will widen lanes, round square corners, and upgrade bridges and culverts, with details pending.

Family-Size Farms to Stay
Farm economist Earl Heady of Iowa State College argues that the trend toward vanishing family-size farms may not accelerate. He notes a 240 acre Town farm operated as a one-family unit with 40 horsepower and equipment is already large enough to capture most cost reductions of larger operations, regardless of production techniques.

Production costs fall with larger farm size up to two hundred acres
The power combination used shows per unit production costs decline rapidly as farm size rises from 80 to 200 acres, then level off. Variable costs per acre stay nearly constant, so the large-farm advantage is modest. The quick drop in unit costs up to 200 acres comes from spreading fixed overhead.
Cost differences in mechanized farming costs per crop unit
Heady notes that costs per $100 of crop product differ little between 320 and 200 acre farms, at about $2.57. The gap widens to $10.74 when comparing 200-acre and 80-acre farms, while many live sales arguments are muted by dead words.
