Carried Rural Route Thirty Nine Years Ago
Rev Calvin Reed of Erie Pennsylvania husband of Bessie Veenschoten visited the area recounts rural letter carrier days from 1900. He and five others were appointed in December 1900 under a strict postmaster who demanded six wagons and faced winter lock issues. Reed recalled a frozen box and a carrier who by spitting loosened a stubborn lock. A 1901 heavy snowfall delayed his route completion for four days before he resigned, noting the salary of 500 dollars yearly and needing to furnish gear. He says today a twenty six mile route has over eight hundred boxes and none of the original carriers are left.
