Research Aids Borer Control For Iowa Corn

Iowa farmers gain new guidance from the Corn Borer Laboratory near Ankeny as USDA and Iowa State College researchers report progress in simpler and more effective borer control. Field tests show DDT at 1% lbs per acre with low pressure spraying yields good results, while several new insecticides such as EPN-300 Dilan and compounds 269 and 711 show high effectiveness in trials, though not yet ready for field use.

Electric Heating Keeps Ice Off Stock Watering Tank

Chipping ice from stock tanks is now largely avoided by thermostatically operated waterers with heating units, says Car roll Worlan of Iowa State College. Heated waterers use electricity to heat a small portion of water while pipes stay above freezing, and units vary to fit farm needs. They can be placed near buildings with low fire risk, but risk of spilled water causing wet areas remains. Buyers should inspect waterer construction to prevent heat waste and damage from stock.

How to Protect Waterers From Freezing in Cold Weather

Worlan advises insulating pipes with dirt manure or straw and placing the waterer on a raised concrete base. Use sheltered locations to cut heating costs, with either overhead or underground wiring. Ensure proper insulation of electrical service and use a ground wire. Only UL approved parts with seals on thermostat and heating element.

Cows Get Their Own Parlor Under Loose Housing

Farmers adopt loose housing for dairy cattle, with cows allowed to roam and milking done in parlor setups. Parlors may be connected to loafing barns, often wet insulated, with bedding needs and 60 to 70 square feet per cow. Milking gear varies from conventional machines to direct milk piping into cans. Running water and electric heaters aid sanitation.

Fumigation Safety Rules and Market Outlook Highlighted

Farmers are warned not to enter fumigated grain bins for 24 hours and must wait 3 to 4 days before feeding treated grain as the fumigant dissipates. Iowa State College economists project more lambs on winter and spring markets than last year, signaling rising supply.
