Gus Van Vliet, 82, recalls arriving at age five in 1854 Pella with parents, early poverty, and 9 years as mayor and 43 years as justice of the peace. Andrew Vos, 91, describes Netherlands to Iowa journey, Central College schooling, shoemaking, farming, Arkansas years, and long driving life.
Paul McNabb, manager of the Farmers Union Service Station, suffered severe facial burns when a stove shot a flame into his face while stirring the fire. Eyelashes and eyebrows were burned away and his face blistered, but doctors say there is no permanent or serious injury. He was blown across the station by the blast. He previously janitored a school building and worked as a mechanic. The newlyweds departed Tuesday for Quincy to make their home.
Oskaloosa Herald reports John Phillips a 72 year old farmer living five miles northwest of Fremont in White Oak township took his life by hanging Thursday afternoon. Relatives offered no reason. Coroner Howard Wilcox said no inquest will be held. Harry Fowler son in law found the body in a shed near the house about 4 pm. The rope was thrown over a rafter and Phillips likely stepped off a jar beneath the body. He acted sometime between 1 and 4 pm while family attended a Christmas program at a nearby school house.
W F Winnie Clark and Lyda Speer, once granted a divorce for cruelty, remarried last week after a three month reconciliation. The couple wed in Memphis Missouri on Sunday December 20, with Mrs Clark living in Milton and employed at the Bluebird Cafe while Mr Clark works in Quincy Illinois.
Woodrow Arch Woodrow of Oskaloosa was sentenced to six months in Keokuk county jail after violating a suspended sentence for driving while intoxicated. He was arrested in September by Sheriff H A Beasley after his car left the road near Sigourney. The sentence was handed down by Judge D W Hamilton in Keokuk county court.
Arch Woodrow pleaded guilty and was fined 300 dollars with a three month jail term suspended on good behavior. He must serve three months if the fine is unpaid and his license is revoked for three months. Fern Woodrow received a divorce from Mahaska county district court the same day his sentence began, citing habitual drunkenness.
Monroe County news tells of A. M. Wilson who took the wrong hat home from church last Sunday. Officials hoped a Christmas program would restore the rightful hat bearer, but the plan failed. W. H. Murfin then swapped hats, yet wore the wrong hat himself, leaving Wilson still hatless and awaiting a swap next Sunday in Albia.
In a local court ruling Frank Harding sued First National Bank of What Cheer for 227.50 after his sister Grace Harding cashed a check on his account. Grace signed his name and the check was payable to her. The court sided with Harding, signaling stricter bank adherence to account ownership and signature rules.
Des Moines paper reports Newton based One Minute Washing Machine Co sold to Iowa Guarantee Mortgage Corp for 750000. J D Adelman becomes president of the washing machine firm, with Clyde B Chariton named vice president and A B E Hammer appointed secretary and treasurer.
The deal covers the majority stock held by F. H. Bergman secretary and general manager and A. H. Bergman president of the One Minute company, signaling a major ownership shift.
The Frank McVey general store in Marysville suffered a complete loss from a fire last week. Cause is unknown. The stock was extensive and partly insured with about 5,000 coverage. Building owner William Brownlee of Ottumwa held insurance as well. The store originated with G. C. Kendall who sold in 1929 to Powell Brothers, then to Powell, then to Brownlee last summer, with sale to Frank McVey on September 1.
Montezuma Republican reports a fire early Thursday in Bob Stanley’s home. Defective wiring between the kitchen and dining room is suspected. the wall and bedroom floor were damaged and a large roof hole occurred above the kitchen. The loss is not yet settled by insurers and the family is staying with relative Mrs Minnie Main in Grinnell.
Indianola Tribune reports Dean Thompson aged 55, a former Indianola resident and retired Altoona merchant, hanged himself Sunday morning at his Altoona home while his family attended church. He had lived in Altoona fifteen years and is survived by his wife and five children.
Ill health was given as the reason for the death by own action by Dr. William Carpenter, Polk county coroner. There will be no inquest.
Wayne Watkins, butcher at the Gendler grocery on Chariton’s square, suffered the amputation of three fingers on his left hand after his hand was mangled in a meat grinder while feeding it ground meat. He was taken to Yocom hospital, operated on, and released the following day.
Des Moines to Keokuk and Eldon routes run by trains 472 473 474 and 476 daily except Sunday. Freight shipments for locals due by 5:00 p m the preceding evening. Both local freights carry passengers.
Wabash time table lists two local westbound trains from Howell. The 5:14 p.m. train accepts passengers to Runnells or Des Moines only and skips other intermediate stations.
