Nick Bogaards recalls early Iowa life on a Pella area farm in the 1850s and 60s, describing homestead hardships, Dutch language ties, prairie winters, Indian neighbors, and the evolution of local transport, schools, and culture as he and D W Gaass reflect on aging figures and local history.
Gilbert Faudree of Hedrick is jailed in Keokuk County charged with stealing chickens from a Hedrick dealer and selling them to an Ottumwa firm. The case arose after an Ottumwa dealer identified Faudree using a farmer’s name and car license linked to his brother Clarence Faudree. The last shipment, 24 birds, sold Friday.
Montezuma county officers voted a ten percent pay cut for all county officials and employees. The Board of Supervisors will reduce their own salaries by ten percent, effective with the new year, with deputies clerks road men office staff surveyors and the county engineer and attorney also affected. The move aims to save money as more officials statewide adopt reductions.
Forest McCroskey, once a Rock Island station youth in Monroe, rose to become treasurer and operator of Consolidated Freight Lines. Based in Portland, Oregon, the firm runs over 2700 miles of highways across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, averaging 15000 to 35000 running miles daily with distant hauls beyond 200 miles from Portland. The company uses fifty four agencies in seventy five towns and hires about 350 full time staff beyond commissions.
A New Sharon man, L. W. Garner, owns a miniature New Testament measuring about one and a quarter by seven eighths inch with illustrated pages. Garner values the item at under 15,000 dollars, rivaling the world's smallest Bible publicized widely by Chicago collectors. He notes the copy is readable under magnification and would be a striking, costly possession for buyers willing to pay.
Chariton Leader reports Albia resident W. S. Montgomery felt an itch for a gun as he drove to Chariton after seeing a large timber wolf cross the road ahead of his car. He said the wolf was one of the largest timber wolves he had seen and appeared to be being tracked as it sped across the highway.
Mrs. George Gable living southwest of New Sharon sustained serious burns when a lamp she was filling exploded. She ran to the yard and rolled in the snow to extinguish the flames, suffering burns to her face hands and body. She is progressing as well as could be expected.
Miss Bernice Scoville of Colfax suffered severe facial bruises and a severed left wrist tendon after a head on collision with a car carrying R. E. Robinson and Fred Harlan from Osceola on Highway 63 near the Mahaska County line south of Fremont. The injured was taken to St Joseph’s hospital Ottumwa with expected release tonight. Rob inson and Harlan faced possible charges in Sigourney as a judge was to set arraignments.
Seymour Herald reports W. S. Merrittie regained possession of his Chevrolet after it was found in a locked garage Monday night. Authorities noted the vehicle’s return restored Merrittie to his property without incident.
Two Knoxville businesses the Dutch Mill Oil Co. and C F Anspach fell victim to fraudulent checks last week. Each loss was 18 50. The alleged con man presented a Des Moines firm as the payer and purchased merchandise at Dutch Mill and Angspach buying rubbers and gloves.
A known firm is the latest racket in forgery. The Iowa Independent Oil Co. was defrauded of $25 by a check from the Home Finance Co. Denver Colo. Businessmen are urged to verify authenticity before cashing such checks.
Marion County News reports Ray Proffitt son of Mr and Mrs Axlie Profitt living south of Beech was badly injured Sunday while attempting to ride an unbroken colt. The animal reared and fell on him, dragging him some distance before the colt stood. Dr Burbank attended him. injuries include severe bruising and possible pelvic injury. Friends hope for a swift recovery.
Lovilia resident Mike Pesto was shot in the jaw and neck by a 22 caliber rifle at the Mellick home. The gun, found and repaired by the Mellick family, was discharged by nine year old Mike Mellick Jr. in an accident after prior testing.
Eighteen men arrived with teams and wagons at B. F. Buckingham’s home on a foggy December morning to crib and pick corn. Women from the neighborhood provided baskets and a noon dinner. After Buckingham’s corn was finished by noon the group moved to Berlin Ballard’s field where each man worked, with Mrs. Ballard serving luncheon upon return.
At the Orpheum Theatre in Des Moines the play Strictly Dishonorable that ran on Broadway is presented with cast selected from the stage version. Paul Lukas Sidney Fox Lewis Stone George Meeker William Riccardi Sidney Toler and Samuel Bonello star, with most leads from the original cast. The plot follows an innocent Southern girl whose fiancé becomes jealous after she dances with an Italian opera singer in a speakeasy.
A romance sparks the man of the world and the innocent girl in the witty play Strictly Dishonorable held at the Avon Theater in New York for over two years and winning the Mergue prize. The Orpheum Theatre hosts a New Year’s Eve show with radio favorites from WOC and WHO including Bob and Barbara and other stars.
