Fumigation Advisories for Crusted Grain Insect Infestations

Guidance notes that if active infestation is found, fumigation is advised. Gunderson favors carbon tetrachloride or a carbon tetrachloride-ethylene dichloride mix. Fumigants are non explosive and less toxic to humans than many agents. Break crust, remove spoiled grain, then apply one gallon of fumigant per 100 cubic feet of grain below crust. Treat only crusted areas. surrounding grain remains below 65 degrees. It is safe to work over the grain during rapid application if done quickly. Fumigant volatility is limited by low air temperatures.
