Record Wide Gain Variations In Livestock

Variation exists in all farm livestock as producers must measure and select animals with best end product at lowest cost. Iowa State College's Leslie E. Johnson cites 1953 calf birth weights from 92 to 60 pounds and six month weights from 490 to 182 pounds. Nebraska station data show bull calves at six months from 438 to 246 pounds and daily gains from 3 to 1.73 pounds.

Gradual Trend Toward Larger Farms in Iowa

A 1920 to 1950 overview shows farms over 19 acres rising in size from 165 to 172 acres while total counts fall from 203,320 to 196,406. Economies of scale and mechanization drive larger holdings though risk rises beyond about 200 acres, with regional shifts most notable in southern pasture and northeast dairy areas.
